FocusNow AI Club, meet-up #5 – 26 August 2026.
The fifth session covered two things: where ServiceNow is taking AI in Strategic Portfolio Management, and an application one of us built to analyse an instance from outside.
AI specialists reach SPM
The SPM direction is no longer speculative. A Demand Management AI Specialist ships in the Australia release, triaging submissions, chasing missing information and converting compliant demands into the pipeline. Project plan and risk generation landed alongside it.
Work that today means typing into a form becomes work a person reviews and approves. Some steps run alone, others stop and ask — the rhythm of an AI coding agent.
The roadmap behind this was presented to a client early in Q2, and parts of it have shipped since.
AI stops being a line item
The commercial change matters more than any feature. AI now ships in every ServiceNow product and package — built in by default, not an add-on — across the Foundation, Advanced and Prime tiers. Otto brings Now Assist, Moveworks and AI Experience into one assistant, and ServiceNow says it will replace the first two across its products over the year ahead.
That flips the question: not which AI to buy, but which AI to switch off, and for whom, before consumption runs ahead of the budget.
Building the check ourselves
An application on a private server syncs selected SPM configuration out of an instance — scripts, business rules, forms — with sensitive data stripped and no user records copied, and holds ServiceNow’s documentation alongside. Personas with assigned roles work an engagement from discovery to deployment, producing update-set XML for a person to apply. Nothing writes back automatically.
Cost is real: every request spends API credit, and even small models accumulate. The unsolved part is not the plumbing but the decomposition — turning one broad requirement into parallel pieces that can be built and tested.
Key takeaways
- The SPM roadmap is when, not if. Plan for review-and-approve, not data entry.
- Treat AI as included; manage consumption instead. The decision is what to enable, and for whom.
- A slide is not availability. Re-check any roadmap you were shown last quarter.
- Cost is a design constraint, not an afterthought. Budget for it before scaling anything agentic.
